Wherein lies greatness of Mike Pence? Indiana governor Mike Pence, who just endorsed Cruz, is also the author of the Pence Touchback Amnesty Scam! [Search for “Pence”] (Unfortunately, Newt Gingrich — who seems to be angling for influence in a Trump administration — embraced a similar scam when he ran for president in 2012.) The key question, of course, is whether any amnesty (touchback or straight-no-chaser) comes only after essential border control measures (mandatory e-Verify, a border wall, a visa control system for starters) have survived court challenge and have been thoroughly up-and-running for long enough to send a message to would-be future illegal migrants. With Pence, the answer was clearly “no.” His plan was a gimmick to sneak a “comprehensive” Amnesty-First bill through Congress. …

There is no greatness to Pence. This is being done to shore up support from Republicans in Congress, who apparently love Pence. Coulter’s column essentially nailed it. Perhaps the Trump campaign also thinks that Pence will help galvanize Rust Belt evangelicals for him. Don’t know if that will really pan out.
I don’t see how this really helps Trump’s general election chances, at least not directly. It just feels like an attempt to placate two components of the anti-Trump crowd: sitting Republican Congressmen and religious conservatives.
I think it ends up hurting Trump as the media will no doubt brand the Republican ticket as anti-gay:
“Mr. Trump, why did you choose someone who hates gay people as your running mate?”
I don’t care for either Newt or Pence, but actually would prefer Newt. Neither of them align with Trump on trade and immigration, and I am fully aware of Newt’s role in NAFTA, but I don’t fear a 74-year old retired Congressman as much as a politician still on the rise (Pence is 57). This is Newt’s final act (like Trump) – there is much less incentive for him to sell out than for Pence, who stands to benefit greatly from trying to swing the Republican platform back to corporatist trade and labor policies in the run up to his future Presidential bid.
Newt Gingrich is the worst possible running mate. Trump became the peoples choice because he is NOT an insider. Gingrich represents the system and that is the last thing Trump supporters want. He destroyed Romney in the last campaign he is not a good man. We want a change in the GOP not the same old rotten garbage we have been fed.
