I'd have no problem with the Democratic establishment saying "We've already picked our woman, and that's it, nobody else gets to talk." I don't think it's unreasonable for the party brass to say "we throw our weight behind the incumbent unless there's a *really* big reason not to"--and they decide what counts as a reason. But if they're going to do that, they should just say so out loud. Saying someone is "unviable" is weaseling out. They're pretending there's an objective reason to exclude Kaus--but it's not an objective reason at all. I mean, who can say what candidate is "viable" this year? Was Scott Brown "viable" in MA? I sure didn't think so in December. Was Obama "viable" in '08? He didn't look that way to me in early '07. Let's face it--*none* of us know what's going on in politics now. So given that, none of us really knows who's viable and who isn't. But that won't stop me, as a Republican, from saying: Carly, DeVore, and the Demon Sheep all look pretty "viable" to me. The Democrats are going to have to beat one of them in a Republican year. Given that, I think it's in their interest to have a long talk about who their candidate ought to be. So maybe letting Mickey talk to the convention wouldn't be such a bad idea...

My letter to Ms. Westly (written in a rush) Dear Ms. Westly, I am a lifelong Republican who has never voted Democratic in a statewide race since moving to California in 1999. Should Mr. Kaus win the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate and Tom Campbell the Republican, I will likely vote Democratic in that race given my qualms about Mr. Campbell's associations. But, given Mrs. Boxer's absence of accomplishment this past 18 years as well as her mean-spirited partisanship, I could never vote for her. Never. If you want to make your party more viable to a partisan Republican who disagrees with Mr. Kaus about 60-76% of the time, but would vote for him over a certain Republican, you should reconsider your decision. There are many more Republicans like myself who disagree with Mickey Kaus, but respect him. They might join me in voting Democratic should he be your party's nominee. And I daresay in a Republican year, this could make the difference in a close election. Fine, say he's not viable. With Mrs. Boxer's high negatives, you're giving my party the best shot in years to take a California Senate seat, given the anti-incumbent mood. The CDP said that because you're unlikely to win, you shouldn't have an opportunity to make your views known to the primary electorate. I'd turn this around and say that this makes you the perfect candidate to demonstrate that the party doesn't have a policy of excluding opposing views and alternate candidates. Since you're not likely to win, it can't possibly do their preferred candidate any harm, can it? And if it could, doesn't that make you a viable candidate?
