Mayorkas’ plan was in theory a carrot (legal pathways) & stick (if you go outside pathways you don’t get in). Problem: There is no stick. Go outside pathways & you still get in. So more are coming. (PS I doubt there ever was a stick.) https://t.co/I7GBvO0ulh

Another way of putting it: “What sort of society do we want?” One where anyone who works, even if unskilled, can earn enough in the market to stand up to anyone–i.e. social equality–or one where employers & the affluent can treat them as disposable? https://t.co/R7g9wAMFaF

One complication with this theory is that the surge of immigrants was set in motion at the very beginning of Biden’s term, a few months before it was clear inflation was a big problem (though Summers warned about it very early on). https://t.co/etlt5Ft6yD

.@JasonFurman–is this true? It seems a mystery why Biden is letting the border break down and economic migrants surge in. https://t.co/TzRdz2bUxa This is one not-implausible explanation on the surface, which has the virtue of portraying Biden as being in charge, not ineffectual. https://t.co/etlt5Ft6yD

Not buying Biden-achieved-more-than-Obama hype. Obamacare seems a less big deal now than in 2010–but I suspect Biden’s EV subsidies (for transition that was happening) will also seem less of a big deal in 12 years. Plus BHO climbed out of big recession https://t.co/DuSKqfkZvr

Is that because a) Biden didn’t grapple with the issue or b) Foer ignored it? Don’t know. Maybe there’s another immigration chapter (doubt it.) Suspect answer is (a)–Biden’s kept busy on trivial refugee issue while asylum abuse blows hole in border. Supports ‘clueless’ thesis 2/

Foer’s immigration chapter is revealing 1) Biden himself wanted kids not to be turned away; 2) WH knew this would produce a surge of kids but fumbled the response; 3) Biden fixates on refugees but seems to ignore the main problem, which is millions of bogus asylum seekers 1/ https://t.co/v2XLviL7tx
