If we could just sell the whole country to one person, then that person could enforce the borders of his private property and libertarians would be cool with it. https://t.co/U5UVrITPi6

Wait. Harris planned her attack on Biden long before the debate https://t.co/RQSWcXM3U8 If this is her stand on the issue, that means it was an utterly cynical stunt (since she doesn't really disagree with him)… https://t.co/l4CJ9UI5gl

If Harris gets away with wriggling out of her previous position this easiliy, it should temper predictions that Dems'll be trapped in the general by their crazy immigration stands today, no? They'll wriggle out of them too. Last resort: 'I will appoint a national commission" https://t.co/cXqXJK6Mx2

But again, there's zero evidence in the report that this is what DHS or Border Patrol thinks. There's a statement that they want detention (or prosecution) not harsh detention. Mainly there's evidence that they are overwhelmed by flood of people seeking entry via asylum claims.

If they did think that harsh ("abhorrent") conditions would actually deter people, of course, that seems crazy. Given the reward of eventual likely entry into US, and what these migrants have been through, the only harshness that might deter would be morally unacceptable.

Note that in talking about need for "ICE detention" they're talking about detention SOMEWHERE ELSE than the overcrowded facility being inspected–which is a (supposedly short term) Border Patrol facility not an ICE facility. Here's the report (see p 14) https://t.co/Jq2Sg656OA

HUH? "Homeland Security admits it's using abhorrent conditions at detention centers to deter migration." This seems UNSUPPORTED by the report, which has Border Patrol talking about need for "ICE detention" or prosecution, not for abhorrent conditions. https://t.co/L0FFivKV8L

If Roberts was acting to preserve the rep of SCOTUS–eg 'we're not Trump's tool just because of a 5-4 majority'–he hasn't done a lot to preserve its public rep (if it has one) as a transparent institution, since nobody seems to believe the reasons in his opinion were his reasons https://t.co/TOllyDY3kh

ANALOGY! A little like saying you can't prosecute OJ for robbery in 2007 if you didn't say your real motive was to punish him for murders you think he committed in 94. Maybe that's the real motive. But if the official reason is good enough-in this case the VRA-it should be OK no? https://t.co/kb8Tl9B5OP

Equality at birth is not enough. Equality "in the eyes of God" is not enough. Equality of opportunity is not enough. Equality before the law is not enough.

Equality of opportunity is so *not* enough to have people treat each other as equal. I'm for equality of outcome–but the outcome is social equality, not money equality. (I assume @Noahpinion is too.) https://t.co/ZRoGJCczQn
