I remember a talk Mayorkas gave (in Beverly Hills, IIRC) shortly after the failure of the Gang of 8 “comprehensive” amnesty bill. He said “We’ll have to find another way,” or words to that effect.

Why not pick one solid, non-BS, discrete reform in HR2 that GOPS like and that Dems can swallow. (Restricting parole back to its original narrow role seems right-sized.) Don’t change the text. Use it to attract enough House GOPs, who can then declare a partial victory… https://t.co/tgqnTRJDGj

Why aren’t any of the pro-Ukraine senators or pundits giving Biden grief about his incompetent handling of Ukraine aid 1) by not getting Dems to save McCarthy 2) by bundling it with a BS border “deal” GOPs who actually cared about the border were sure to reject.
Result: no aid.

This is such a silly take. It depends what was in the “bi-partisan bill” and whether it would have actually helped end the immigration crisis. It wouldn’t have (in part because people like Mayorkas were writing it). The House position is consistent–they didn’t like the bill. https://t.co/5tkRIKFC1Y
