An alternative explanation (for eg throwing persuadable pro-lifers into the evil MAGA bin) is that Dems just can’t help themselves …

He didn’t do that maybe because this was half a base-mobilizing speech–or at least a “don’t discourage the base with conciliation” speech–at a time when, thanks to Dobbs, base turnout is supposed to be already in the bag.

Good point: If Biden was trying to maximize swing voter/anti-Trump GOP swing to Dems, he would have given a different speech, no? https://t.co/MPLKBBveGl

Don’t think this is right. The problem is Biden’s conflating Trump supporters who are into 1/6 & alternate electors etc with *other Trump supporters* who aren’t. The latter (big?) group are not traditional conservatives (*esp.* on Soc Sec). Biden lumps them with the Oath Keepers https://t.co/csY3PFAlSW

Suggested explanation: The national GOP isn’t making an issue of it because their donors want amnesty and cheap labor, and if the GOP wins on the border issue it will be harder for them to sell out to their donors and pass an amnesty. https://t.co/mNUK0eYtWj

Biden may be right or wrong, but he’s been a combative blowhard for decades. The idea that last week’s “stark dualism” came because “age…frees the tongue” is…off. Let’s say it’s off.

Also off: Ganesh on U.S. voters–“a third or more of the electorate is simply unreachable.” https://t.co/sZJIoLeiaJ

Biden launched campaign (https://t.co/A8sel9djwK) with deceptive** attempt to enforce strict good people-bad people view of Charlottesville debacle. That’s template
**Deceptive because Trump didn’t say Nazi types were “good people.” He condemned them. https://t.co/SYLWiNgwGA
